Old-school funk comes to the Crown Room

(Tahoe.com, 12/16/09)

Want the funk?

The Crown Room has the funk Friday, Dec. 18, when the Bay Area’s Monophonics perfom a free show.
The real type of thing going down is a seven-piece band, including Hammond organ and a horn section.

Inspired by the Meters’ and Tower of Power’s music from the late 1960s and early ’70s, Monophonics was formed in 2005 by drummer Austin Bohlman. He put together “the funkiest players” he knew to open show for Vinyl in San Francisco’s Boom Boom Room.

Monophonics’ debut album, “Playin and Simple” was released in September 2007. A soon-to-be-released follow-up CD will include guest saxophonist Karl Denson, singer Marcus Scott and Tower of Power trumpet-trombonist Mic Gillette.

Not to be confused with the Pittsburgh, Pa., rock group the Monophonics, Monophonics is a SF Weekly “Best of the Bay” winner for its old-school style and sound.

The band’s horn section has performed with Russell Batiste and his Orchestra from Da Hood (members of Galactic, Papa Grows Funk, the Funky Meters) and recorded for Eric Krasno (Soulive/Lettuce). Members of the rhythm section are involved in a collaborative turntabalism-live music project with Bay Area DJ Crew, 4OneFunk, called 4OnePhonics.

The band received a favorable review from Jambase.com: “Monophonics has been stirring quite the buzz throughout the Bay Area over the last few years with their organic seven-piece funk outfit that sends the dance floor into a fury with their horn section that never disappoints.”

Monophonics soulmate Vinyl also comes to the Crystal Bay Casino Dec. 27.

Jambands.com Reviews 11/25 Show w/ Vinyl

Posted in Shows

Vinyl celebrated its new remix album Fogshack Music Volume 2 the night before Thanksgiving at San Francisco’s the Independent. The Rondo Brothers, who appear on the new release, opened the night before The Monophonics took the stage. The group offered a high-energy show that included a cover of the theme from S.W.A.T.. Beginning with a version of The Nite-Liters’ “Afro-Strut,” the members of Vinyl filtered onto the stage until the entire band had emerged. The Monophonics horn section remained for covers of Dr. Lonnie Smith’s “Layin’ in the Cut” and Kool & the Gang’s “Give it up,” and the entire band later returned for a take on Fela Kuti’s “Gentleman.”
In addition, Les Claypool, another guest on the band’s new release, took the stage for Roy Ayers’ “Aragon” and The Rondo Bros. and Marcus Scott appeared on a cover of WAR & Eric Burdon’s “Spill the Wine,” among others. Later in the night, Scott returned for a 45-minute medley of James Brown songs. The night came to a close shorty after 1 AM with the members of both Vinyl and The Monophonics running through Fela Kuti’s “Expensive Shit.”
